Perioada desfasurarii: 24-25 iunie 2013
Denumire conferinta: Conferința Internațională în domeniul Filologie

Titlu articol prezentat: Narațiunea literară în traducere: aspecte teoretice și practice
Coautor(i):

Titlu articol prezentat: Narrative, Fictionality and the Imaginary
Coautor(i):
Cuvinte cheie: literary narrative, fictional narrative, imaginary (Iser)
Abstract: While the differentiation between factual and fictional narratives and, perhaps more interestingly, the blurred areas between them, such as autofiction, are also considered, the primary focus of this article is the conceptualization of the relation between the fictional and the imaginary. It begins by sketching Wolfgang Iser’s concept of the imaginary as part of his real – fictive – imaginary triad: characterized by ‘featurelessness’, it requires a medium for its manifestation, which is provided by the fictive; thus it can only be apprehended in its functions and not as substance. The advantage provided by the elimination of thinking in binary terms, i.e. real – fictional (the extent of his successfulness can be debated, cf. Zipfel) makes it possible to better view both the interplay between fictive and imaginary and their interaction with the surrounding context. By applying this to narrative, the text type that also represents a mode of knowledge, it becomes possible to better grasp the degree of fictionality that, as Hayden White and Paul Ricouer suggest, constitutes a part of any story. The relation between literary narrative and the imaginary is then explored by looking at two first-person narrator works linked by theme of childhood, an entirely fictional one (Adventures of Huckleberry Finn) and one belonging to the memoir genre (Amintiri din copilărie / Memories of My Boyhood).

Titlu articol prezentat: The Analysis of Narrative Discourse. Some Considerations
Coautor(i):
Cuvinte cheie: narrative discourse, narratology, discourse analysis, frame narrative, structuralism
Abstract: The paper considers discourse analysis and narratives, specifically the manner in which narratives as a particular form of discourse are analysed. After a brief exploration of the key concepts in this instance, namely text, discourse, discourse analysis, narratology, and noting both the plurivalent understanding of the term ‘discourse analysis’ and the increasingly interdisciplinary study of narrative after its clearly structuralist modern beginnings, the article focuses on their relation to the narrative text/discourse and on the analysis of the narrative discourse, understood as the expression plane of the narrative, relying on Lockwood’s framing narrative in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights for exemplification purposes.

Titlu articol prezentat: «The Villain in Wuthering Heights»: An Analysis of Ellen Dean’s Narrative Discourse
Coautor(i):
Cuvinte cheie: narratology, discourse analysis, identity
Abstract: Drawing on James Hafley’s 1958 piece of writing in which he argues for the perception of Ellen Dean as “one of the consummate villains in English literature”, the article sets out to investigate the facets of the character’s narrative discourse. Whether truth as she views it, or deliberate misdirection, the intradiegetic narrator’s presentation of her own actions and thoughts provide a multitude of interpretations, from “a specimen of true benevolence and homely fidelity” to “hidden enemy”. However, the construction of the reasonings employed by the character to support, or possibly to rationalize, even to excuse her actions may be evidenced as logical fallacies, or, alternately, as indicative of solipsistic plans. Consequently, the analysis showcases her autonarrative as a means of (re)constructing identity.

Cuvinte cheie: dissociative identity disorder, double, split personality, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Abstract: Characterized by the alternative manifestation of multiple identities or personalities in the same individual, dissociative identity disorder (DID) has gained most of its attention and notoriety through its depictions in literature and cinematography. One of the first literary insights is offered by Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella [The] Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which makes use of the enduring motif of the double in portraying Dr Jekyll’s failure-bound attempt to eliminate the perceived weaknesses of his character. Traditionally read as an allegory of the struggle between good and evil, this novella may also be connected with Victorian repression and the desire to rebel.

Titlu articol: Specific Problems of Translation in the Harry Potter Series
Coautori:
Cuvinte cheie: source culture oriented/target culture oriented translation, focalization, overt/covert narrator, children’s literature
Abstract: Starting from the idea that translation is a cultural transfer, a mediation between two language cultures, the discussion is focused on the two approaches to translation, i.e. the source language culture-oriented, or target language culture-oriented translation. The problem of the duality of literal vs. free translation is also brought up. The discussion is based on the analysis of the English, Romanian and German versions of Harry Potter and the findings are as interesting as useful to parallel corpora analysis from the translation studies perspective.
