In this paper we analyze the regime of the stream discharge and the sediment transport on the main tributaries of the Siret River considering the recent climate change and the anthropogenic impact.
The increasing discontinuity and intensity of rainfall and the irrational deforestation from the past 20 years are representing major controlling factors for the stream discharge and sediment transport.
The major floods that have occured in the last years produced important changes on the hydrological regime, by changing the values of the mean annual values and the return period of the maximum values.
In the past 10 years occured at least 5 sequences with major floods: 2004 and 2005 on the Trotus River and on the lower reach of the Siret River; 2006 in Arbore area – Suceava; 2008 and 2010 on the upper reach of the Siret River.
We try to identify the changes occured in hydrological regime of the main tributaries of the Siret River wich are in the administration of ABA Siret – Bacau, using their data base.
The parameters studied are the mean annual stream and sediment discharge and maximum values produced.
We will also try to identify the evolution of this parameters through the monitoring period and to compare with the trend from the last decade.

Abstract: Starting from the experience of the past years, when major floods (1991, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010) and long droughts (2000, 2003, 2010, 2011, 2012) affected the Siret river basin, the authors are trying to make a complex analysis of the hydro-climatic situation from the past years and of the evolution of these risk phenomenon – flood and droughts. This paper uses the data base obtained from the monitoring network of the Siret river basin and from the specific references regarding hydroclimatic tendencies from the study area. The authors are analyzing the forming and evolution conditions of the major floods recorded in the last 35 – 40 years from the Siret River Basin and of the drought phenomena. Beside the presentation of major floods and long drought periods, there are also considered in this paper the damages and measures to prevent and combat these phenomena.

Abstract: In 2010, an exceptional flood occurred on Siret River, with liquid flow rates so high that it exceeded the maximum values so far known in many of the monitoring sections (Siret, Huţani, Lespezi). The suspended load flows produced during this flood were uncommonly high on various sections of the river.
This paper presents several aspects concerning the conditions in which solid flows are formed and how they evolve, as well as maximum rates recorded during this flood.
Statistical processing of the instantaneous values allowed realization of an association of suspended load flows taking into account the liquid flow. There have also been realized a few very suggestive diagrams regarding special characteristics of the suspended load flow on Siret River.
Following the analysis of the data, we have seen that anthropogenic impact proves to have the greatest influence on suspended load transportation.

Titlu articol: The sediment transport of the Siret River during the floods from 2010

Abstract: Beginning with 2004 in the Siret River Catchment there occurred exceptional flash floods that exceeded the maximum historical values recorded, on the main river and on its tributaries (2004, the Trotuş River; 2005, the Siret River, the Trotuş River, the Bistriţa River, the Putna River; 2006 - the Clit River from the Suceava River Catchment; 2008, the Siret River, the Suceava River). The 2010 summer flood from the Siret River also falls in this category. This paper uses hydrological data (water discharge, suspended sediment discharge) between the 20th of June and 10th of July 2010 from 5 gauging stations located on the Siret River: Siret, Hutani, Lespezi, Dragesti, Lungoci, and also meteorological data (rainfall) measured at different gauging stations from the Siret River Catchment. The rainfall recorded in this time of the year in the catchment was very high, with values up to 210 l/m2 in approximately 10 days. The hydrographs of the flash flood indicate the fact that the transit of the water trough the reservoirs system from the Siret River (Rogojeşti - Bucecea and Răcăciuni – Bereşti –Călimăneşti - Movileni) reduced the maximum water discharge with values between 7-27%. The values of the maximum sediment discharge also recorded a reduction while transiting this reservoirs system with approximately 60%. The evolution of the Siret river bed channel during this flood (aggradations with values between 15-100 cm and degradations starting from 65 cm until 200 cm, in different moments of the flood) is influenced by the high values of the water and sediment discharge and by anthropogenic interventions on the river bed (pit-ballast, regularization of the river bed, reservoirs). Processing the hydrological and meteorological data recorded during the flood (20th of June – 10th of July 2010) indicates two important features of this event: the climatic variability – exemplified by the big values of precipitations from the catchment and the anthropogenic impact revealed by the transit of the flood wave and the evolution of the river bed.

Abstract: In this paper we calculate the trap efficiency of the
reservoirs in the Siret Basin and we make also a briefly analysis to show
the way this reservoirs influence the sediment discharge of the rivers by
sedimentation. Trap efficiency (TE) is an indicator and parameter of sediment yield from upstream and of sedimentation rate from the
reservoirs. In consequence we calculate for 14 reservoirs in the Siret Basin this parameter. The values of TE vary between 42 – 98% and
correlates very well with the capacity of the reservoirs. In reservoirs with
the high capacity the values approach to 100% while in small reservoirs, the value of TE is decreasing. Capacity and operating mode lakes are
important factors controlling the degree of retention of sediment from
the source area. Sedimentation within reservoirs is a problem as it decrease the storage capacity and, hence, makes the structure less efficient. For small reservoirs, sedimentation can become a severe problem as the rate of siltation is generally much higher in comparison to
large dams.

Abstract: This paper is focused on the changes over the past 50 years in the channel beds of seven major rivers that are part of the Siret drainage basin located in eastern Romania. Each river has been subjected to various degrees of human intervention, assessed based on the morphological quality index (MQI): two rivers (Siret and Bistrița) have undergone complex human interventions on 40 and 60%, respectively, of their channel lengths, two rivers (Suceava and Moldova) are 30% artificial, and the remaining three rivers (Trotuș, Putna, and Buzău) have a good or moderate MQI.
The changes occurring in channel beds and data on water discharge (Qw) and sediment load (Qs) were assessed simultaneously for the last 50 years. The bedload was indirectly evaluated as ranging between 5 and 15% of the total sediment load. It was determined that incision was prevalent among the processes acting on the channel-bed sections under investigation (representing 62% of the altered area and changing bed level by between -0.25 and -2.70 m), with aggradation accounting for the remaining 38% (causing changes ranging from + 0.15 to + 1.25 m). The magnitude of the processes (incision or aggradation) for sections with an MQI < 0.3 was four times higher than for sections with a moderate or good MQI (> 0.3).
The pattern of change in the channel-bed processes between 1960 and 2010 for all river categories was as follows: a low rate of incision from 1960 to 1979, followed by a higher rate of incision from 1980 to 1989, and finally a tendency of recovery toward the river’s initial state, characterised by a decrease in the incision rate or slight aggradation after 1990. The variable that exhibited the strongest response to climate conditions was water discharge (Qw), whereas the sediment load (Qs) was highly responsive to both climatic signals and anthropogenic factors. The sediment load has been instrumental in the adjustments of the channel beds by maintaining a balance between the two controlling factors, nature and man.
