Abstract: Taking into consideration the idea that gender is changed/influenced or rebuilt through using the digital cultural spaces and the important impact of new media on individual's daily activities, this work in progress paper aims to propose further exploration of gender performances in online games, by analyzing interaction among players, construction and main characteristics of the virtual character, and the motivation for choosing the MMORPG type of game. The paper investigates expression and performance of masculinity among Romania Cabal players and the manner in which the manifestation of gender fluidity characteristics or their reaffirmation could constitute a dividing line between the virtual environment and the real one, gender relations being reconfigured or not following the use of this type of games.

Abstract: Detachment of the physical body through the computer interface, and identity dislocation in cyberspace suggest that the possibility of “(…) the disappearance of this expressive relationship between body and gender identity” (Foster, 2000:440) has a major impact on users exploring alternative multiple sexual and gendered identities. Foster theorises that sexuality, race and gender are similar to “identity prostheses” in cyberspace, and “prosthetic sexual identities have the positive effect of denaturalizing binary gendered identities” (Foster, 2000:442). The human body boundaries and fixed identities are reconsidered in the digital age. With the advent of new technologies, bodily and identity reconfiguration through virtual disembodiment and subjectivity transfer to a virtual entity are becoming common practices. Individuals are now empowered to explore a wide range of alternative identities and (better) worlds through computer technology and cyberspace. The virtual, post-human body is thus the post-gendered body capable of disrupting the superimposed dichotomy female/male.
However, various virtual communities, as well as many websites, blogs, forums, and online games may support a wide specter of opportunities for gender identity fluidity, or rather they can act upon reinforcement of the classic characteristics of femininity and masculinity. Nevertheless, as the qualitative analysis conducted in two Romanian gamers communities (Cabal Online and Professional Gamers League) will reveal, virtual communities expose that relationship between society, individuals and cyberspaces is one of mutual shaping. Users humanize virtual communities, and cyberspace vividly reflects social offline features, such as norms, regulations, gendered and racial behaviors and attitudes. While exploring how reality is negotiated in cyberspace and how cyberspace encompasses aspects of offline reality, this paper also aims to analyze to what extent gamers virtual communities provide an appropriate electronic landscape for gender and identity post-humanist manifestations.

Coautori:
Cuvinte cheie: European Parliament, elections, mass media, gender stereotypes
Abstract: The present article aims to offer a gender-sensitive media analysis of the 2009 European Parliament elections in Romania. The essay focuses on how the regional and national mass media approached women political candidates in comparison with their male counter-candidates and also on the effects of the patriarchal norms and attitudes, traditional gender roles, and the (non)gendered discourses of the candidates. The qualitative research methods used are press monitoring followed by content analysis. The following aspects were considered for discussion: a) the propensity or lack of the feminist/gendered elements into the candidates’ discourses (and explanations); b) how mass media approaches the discourses and the electoral programs of women candidates; c) gender stereotypes used by both male and female candidates and mass media alike.

Abstract: THIS PAPER PROPOSES A SOCIO-HISTORICAL APPROACH TO THE EMERGENCE OF (ONLINE) VIDEO GAMES IN ROMANIA. AS A PART OF THE POPULAR CULTURE, VIDEO GAMES (ARE SUPPOSED TO) INFLUENCE SOCIAL AND INDIVIDUAL VALUES, ATTITUDES, BEHAVIORS, AND TO CHALLENGE COMMON UNDERSTANINGS OF COMMUNITY OR LESIURE TIME WITHIN THE DIGITAL ERA. THIS PAPER AIMS TO FIND ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH QUESTIONS BY ANALYZING THE SOCIAL CLIMATE IN WHICH VIDEO GAMES DEVELOPED IN ROMANIA: WHAT TYPES OF GAMER COMMUNITIES EXIST AND WHAT ARE THEIR MAIN CHARACTERISTICS? ARE THE NEW VIRTUAL WORLDS ABLE TO CHALLENGE GENDER, ETHNIC OR CLASS DIFFERENCES? THE PAPER EMPHASIZES THAT IDENTITY RECONFIGURATION IN CYBERSPACE – THROUGH ERASURE OF THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED IDENTY MARKERS – IS STILL A UTOPIA. THE METHOD USED TO INVESTIGATE THIS ASPECT IS THAT OF QUALITATIVE CONTENT ANALYSIS APPLIED TO TEXTUAL CONTENTS IN SEVERAL VIRTUAL GAMERS COMMUNITIES. CONCLUSIONS SUGGEST THAT, IN SPITE OF THE ATEMPORAL, SYNTETIC, AND DISEMBODIED CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VIRTUAL WORLDS, THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL OFFLINE WORLD‟S FEATURES ARE SPECIFICALLY REFLECTED WITHIN THE VIRTUAL FIELD.
